Re: Christmas movies

I find it a little bit ironic that so many people who will say that there's a "war on Christmas"/ "don't bother celebrating Christmas if you don't want to hear about Jesus" love A Christmas Carol in it's various incarnations. Not only does it not contain a single reference to Jesus, but it more or less invented/revitalized secular Christmas, bringing the spotlight back onto the then suppressed pre-Christian customs.

Actually, I'm surprised that there hasn't been backlash against the story. I've heard and seen so many people that protest the slow decline of manger scenes at Christmastime, and the "secularization" of it, but never once have I heard anyone attack A Christmas Carol. Perhaps it so perfectly captures the true human meaning of the holiday that no one stops to question it anymore?

Top Ten: Comics

Since this decade is quickly coming to an end, I am going to attempt to make weekly posts of my personal top ten of some given thing. It should be noted that these lists are restricted to things I personally have experienced or remember.

The bottom 5 are in no particular order:

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead is in the ever growing in popularity Zombie genre, but I feel that this work is of note. It's not just a zombie comic, it is both the quintessential zombie story and somehow original. It's not just about escaping zombies, it is about survival. It is about love and life. This comic keeps me turning pages like no other.

Ultimate Spider-man

To be honest, when I originally heard about this, my first thought was, "That's going to suck." Thankfully, I was entirely wrong. This comic completely preserves all of the fun of reading a Spidey comic, and has the advantage of being written by a single author. I believe that there are no ret-cons here, which is quite refreshing in a mainstream American comic title.

Y: The Last Man

While I do have some issues with the rather heavy handed method of delivering it's message, the writing outside of this heavy handedness is top notch. Y: The Last Man is about the world post an apocalyptic event which kills every male mammal on the planet, with the exception of one Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand.

Kick-Ass

Kick-Ass is... fantastic. A high school kid decides that even if no one else is crazy enough to be a super-hero and stand up for those who can't help themselves, he will. He gets his ass kicked on his first venture... and his second.... you can see where this is going. This book is filled with nerdy fan projection, and written tongue in cheek. Try to read it before the movie comes out next year.

Pluto

This is Astro Boy re-imagined as a murder mystery, featuring Gesitch the robot detective. If that does not make you want to read it, I don't know what else to say.

Top 5:

5. Invincible

Invincible is a super-hero comic which takes all of the good things from the golden and silver age of comics, throws in a touch of modern styling, and blends it all together into the super-hero comic I always wanted to read, but didn't think existed. This comic takes itself seriously as a story, yet is still pure, unadulterated fun.

4. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

In this comic, classic literary figures all live in the same world. What more could you need to know?

3. 20th Century Boys

This is a story about the men who save the world. It is an epic tale spanning from shared childhood memories through to the imagined future. Our Friend is waiting.

2. Blankets

While not complex in plot like many of the other comics on this list, this autobiographical coming-of-age story is one that I hold dear to my heart. Reading this book was much like looking into a fun house mirror, except that, in this mirror, I was amazed at how similar two very different lives could be.

1. Fables

All of the characters from your favorite fairy tales have been displaced from their world into ours, due to an Adversary invading their lands. They now live in modern day New York, and have adjusted to living in our world. The story starts with a murder mystery: Who killed Red Rose?

Honorable Mention: Full Metal Alchemist

Two side notes:
1) I will update this entry later with images to go with the list.
2) My laptop has been out for repairs since "black Friday". I should get it back tomorrow, with any luck.
